On 15th May 2025, the Manchester Databricks User Group hosted another engaging gathering of data professionals at the welcoming Slalom office on Marble Street. The evening brought together data scientists, engineers, and industry experts to explore the latest advancements in Databricks, share knowledge, and connect with like-minded individuals.

Luke Thorp: What’s New in Databricks - a Data Scientist’s Perspective
Kicking off the evening, Luke Thorp, Solutions Architect at Databricks, delivered an enlightening session packed with insights into the evolving world of data science and Gen AI on Databricks. Luke showcased exciting updates, including tools like Batch Inference using AI Functions and the newly introduced Databricks Apps. He also touched on emerging innovations such as Agentic AI and the AI Builder, sparking curiosity about how these advancements will shape data workflows and enhance productivity.

Sam Capewell: Unlocking the Future of Data Science and AI with CAVU and Databricks
Sam Capewell, Lead Data Scientist at CAVU, shared CAVU’s transformational adoption of Databricks, detailing the game-changing role of Databricks Asset Bundles in scaling project development while supporting complex business needs. He also provided a glimpse into ongoing and future machine learning initiatives that CAVU is leveraging to stay ahead in the data science space.

Of Course, There Was Pizza
True to tradition, the evening included plenty of networking opportunities over delicious pizza and drinks. Thankfully, the pizzas were sliced this time! Attendees had the chance to create new connections, exchange ideas, and share experiences around Databricks and data science in general - the event encapsulated the blend of innovation and camaraderie that makes the Manchester Databricks User Group so special.
